John Hughes started working with MSCM in 2010 as our Director of Accounting Standards, and is also a financial reporting consultant.
John is known to many (for better or worse) from his time as Manager, Corporate Finance at the Ontario Securities Commission, where among many other things he led the review program for continuous disclosure filings. Since leaving the OSC he has increasingly focused on International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), most prominently by co-editing the first edition of the Deloitte publication iGAAP: IFRS for Canada. More recently, he wrote his own, more investor-friendly IFRS guide: IFRS Literacy: Understanding the New Financial Statements, now available through CCH. He also provides regular commentary on the MSCM IFRS blog. In addition to IFRS, his continuing areas of expertise include MD&A, disclosure controls and procedures, and regulatory compliance in general.
Before any of this, John obtained his BA degree in film and philosophy, and will match his knowledge of cinema history against that of any other accountant. His weekly film column has appeared in Toronto’s The Outreach Connection newspaper since 1997.
