Here’s what we’ve been up to lately
WEEKEND TO END WOMEN’S CANCERS
A team of dedicated individuals – proudly sponsored by MSCM LLP – have committed to raising $25,000 "one step at a time" to support the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers, a 2-Day 60km or 1-Day 32km walk through the streets of Toronto.

DOROTHY LEY GOLF CLASSIC
Every summer the Dorothy Ley Hospice Golf Classic gets into full swing and the July 24, 2010 event was no exception. The day which raises money for the Etobicoke based hospice, is action-packed – this years theme was Caddyshack – with 19 holes of golf, a silent auction, contests and a chance to meet Celebrity guest players. Thanks for a great round!
Upcoming Events: A number of signature events are conducted throughout the year as fundraising opportunties for the Hospice. Join us for the 3rd Annual Halloween Bed Race on Sunday, October 24, 2010. It’s the only time of year teams of up to six members will have the opportunity to race a hospital bed down the Kingsway in Etobicoke!
Last year MSCM’s team of 8 speedy runners (and sleepers) had a great day and helped raise over $4,000. See Sidebar

MSCM Post-Tax Social
On Friday, April 30, MSCM enjoyed a well deserved night out which included a sit-down dinner and some R&R at Spice Route to mark the end of busy-season. It was an enjoyable night for the entire firm. See sidebar for the photos from this event.
father-daughter team helps kids have fun
On Sunday May 2, Senior Partner David Danziger and his daughter Jana took part in the Sporting Life 10km run. A fundraiser for kids with cancer, proceeds from this popular annual event go to support Camp Oochigeas. Staffed by doctors and nurses from Sickkids, "Camp Ooch" enables kids to experience the fun and camaraderie of summer camp while undergoing IV chemotherapy and blood transfusions.
Well done, David and Jana. In a run like this, everybody wins!
UFE CELEBRATION
MSCM celebrates at the UFE Ball and congratulates our UFE writers on the successful completion of their examinations. See sidebar for photos.
FIRM NIGHT OUT WITH THE RAPTORS
On Friday March 5, MSCM took a break from our busy season to take in a Raptors game at the ACC. Always an entertaining event, a great time was had by all, and it didn't hurt that it was a close game with a win over New York. See sidebar for photos.
SCHOLARSHIP & BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARDS
Our own Irene Faria is a member of the Federation of Portuguese Canadian Business and Professionals (“FPCBP”). MSCM are the accountants for the FPCBP which recently recognized and honored students and business people of Portuguese heritage at its annual gala dinner in Toronto. Two awards that were presented are of particular interest.
1. The Rui & Luisa Faria Scholarship Fund awarded $1,500 to Elisia Neves who earned an Honours Bachelor Degree in Architectural Studies in 2008 and is currently completing a Masters of Architecture
2. Wilson Teixeira of Able Transport Limited (a client of MSCM) was awarded the New Generation Award which recognizes entrepreneurs under the age of 40. Congratulations to all the recipients!
COYOTES WITH HEART
MSCM’s Andrew Spidle and his fellow “Hamilton Coyotes” teammates were proud to place second in total fundraising in excess of $31,000 for life saving research at the first annual “Hockey for Heart” Charity Tournament for the Heart and Stroke Foundation held in Kitchener Ontario.
Helping Haiti
In the first few days after the recent earthquake in Haiti, the full extent of the destruction and loss of life became clear, and we were all shocked by what we saw. Like so many others, the people of MSCM were moved to begin a fund-raising program to aid the relief effort. Our staff quickly donated $4,025, which was instantly matched by the firm’s partners. Our total of $8,050 was then matched by Canadian Government relief funds, for a total of $16,100 to be donated to the Canadian Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Program. The re-building program in Haiti has barely begun, but we are hopeful that our contribution will help the Red Cross to continue their mission of mercy.
2009 Tournament a solid success
The 2009 Jo Thorman Memorial Golf Tournament was held on Saturday, September 12, 2009 and was, once again, a resounding success. The Glen Abbey Golf Club was an ideal setting for us to enjoy the friendly company and the challenging golf. As a group, the golfers raised $3,800, plus an additional $770 in the lucky raffle, bringing the total to $4,570. In the past, MSCM LLP has matched any money we have raised. This year, the firm actually doubled what was raised. As a result, the total donations in the current year are $14,000, just shy of last year’s record of $15,800. This also brings the total we have raised since we started donations to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to $66,240.
