The 2011 Jo Thorman Memorial Golf Tournament was held on September 10, 2011 and was once again, a resounding success. As a group, the golfers raised $5,070, plus an additional $940 in the lucky raffle, bringing the total to $6,010. MSCM, in addition to covering the costs of dinner and a few raffle prizes, donated an additional $8,000. There were also a couple of other private donations, bringing the current year’s total to $15,000. This also brings the total we have raised since we started donations to exactly $95,000.

2010 Tournament a solid success
The 2010 Jo Thorman Memorial Golf Tournament was held on Sunday September 12, 2010 and was, once again, a resounding success. The Glen Abbey Golf Club was an ideal setting for us to enjoy the friendly company and the challenging golf. As a group, the golfers raised $4,250, plus an additional $960 in the lucky raffle, bringing the total to $5,210. In the past, MSCM LLP has matched any money we have raised. This year, our firm contributed 150% of what we raised. As a result, the total donations in the current year are $13,760, just shy of our all time record of $15,800. This also brings the total we have raised since we started donations to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to exactly $80,000.

Walking tall - and together - to end women's cancers
MSCM is proud to have had an amazing team participating in the 2010 Weekend to End Womenʼs Cancers walkathon, Sept 11 and 12. Four people walked on both days, and five more walked on one day. Despite sore muscles, most of the one-day walkers are up to the challenge of doing the 2-day walk next year, so our team can only grow stronger.
We would like to thank Jack Cooper for suggesting that we put an MSCM team together and the firm for the very generous contributions to our team. Donations are still being processed, but by last count, it appears that we will exceed our goal of $25,000!
Team members report that it was a joy to walk across the Finish Line together in Downsview. “One step at a time”– a great accomplishment for nine pairs of legs. Thanks are due to all the staff and family members who showed up at the Cheering Station—your smiles and hugs meant more than you can imagine. Sorry that you had to wait over 2-3 hours but when 4,600 walkers leave the CNEʼs Princes' Gates at the same time and we have traffic lights to contend with, itʼs hard to forge ahead.
DOROTHY LEY GOLF CLASSIC
Every summer the Dorothy Ley Hospice Golf Classic gets into full swing and the July 24, 2010 event was no exception. The day which raises money for the Etobicoke based hospice, is action-packed – this years theme was Caddyshack – with 19 holes of golf, a silent auction, contests and a chance to meet Celebrity guest players. Thanks for a great round!

Well done, David and Jana. In a run like this, everybody wins!

FIRM NIGHT OUT WITH THE RAPTORS

Two awards that were presented are of particular interest.
1. The Rui & Luisa Faria Scholarship Fund awarded $1,500 to Elisia Neves who earned an Honours Bachelor Degree in Architectural Studies in 2008 and is currently completing a Masters of Architecture
2. Wilson Teixeira of Able Transport Limited (a client of MSCM) was awarded the New Generation Award which recognizes entrepreneurs under the age of 40. Congratulations to all the recipients!
COYOTES WITH HEART
MSCM’s Andrew Spidle and his fellow “Hamilton Coyotes” teammates were proud to place second in total fundraising in excess of $31,000 for life saving research at the first annual “Hockey for Heart” Charity Tournament for the Heart and Stroke Foundation held in Kitchener Ontario.
Helping Haiti
In the first few days after the recent earthquake in Haiti, the full extent of the destruction and loss of life became clear, and we were all shocked by what we saw. Like so many others, the people of MSCM were moved to begin a fund-raising program to aid the relief effort. Our staff quickly donated $4,025, which was instantly matched by the firm’s partners. Our total of $8,050 was then matched by Canadian Government relief funds, for a total of $16,100 to be donated to the Canadian Red Cross Haiti Earthquake Program. The re-building program in Haiti has barely begun, but we are hopeful that our contribution will help the Red Cross to continue their mission of mercy.
