2009 Tournament a solid success
The 2009 Jo Thorman Memorial Golf Tournament - Saturday September 12, 2009
Glen Abbey Golf Club
Thanks to All Participants and Supporters
We would like to extend our thanks to all the participants and supporters of this year's Jo Thorman Memorial Golf Tournament. Although attendance was slightly down this year, we had a very successful tournament and a fantastic day. This is for many reasons:
• Many return golfers and a few new faces
• Great day for golf at a fabulous golf facility that I think everyone enjoyed
• Great camaraderie (and harassment) at the post golf festivities
• Another great year of raising money for a worthy cause
The Glen Abbey course was superb as always, and we plan to have next year’s event there as well, with the goal of having even more golfers participate. We are also considering holding the event on a Sunday to give the out of town players a chance to come up for an early round on Saturday. As always, your feedback on this idea is appreciated.
Tournament Summary
Many of you are well aware of the focus of the tournament, which actually began well before Jo Thorman passed away. Originally, it was just a bunch of guys (mostly old high school friends) getting together for a fun tournament. Over the years, it grew to the point that we had about 20 participants putting in $100 each, and we would pay it out based mostly on who was the luckiest that day. We even got to the point of awarding a corny trophy.
After Jo passed away, the group decided that some of the proceeds could go to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation as a tribute to her. The idea soon evolved, and today, all the money raised is donated to charity, with the receipts for the donations being split between the golfers (again, based on who was luckiest that day).
This year, the golfers, as a group, raised $3,800, plus an additional $770 in the lucky raffle, bringing the total to $4,570. In the past, MSCM LLP has matched any money the tournament raised. This year, the firm went further and actually doubled its contribution. As a result, the total donations in the current year are $14,000, just shy of last year’s record of $15,800. This also brings the total we have raised since we started donations to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to $66,240.
